Richard Lester, BEng has spent several years in the design and manufacture of water reuse products. Due to climatic and social change both water reuse and flooding have become equal problems which must be addressed. He considers a holistic approach to issues surrounding the extremes of rainfall in the UK. Although average rainfall has not shown any significant change it is the time and rate that are the variables.
Richard explains the concept of RainActiv which combines the benefits of rainwater harvesting with a SuDS solution. Collecting roof water, storing and using at source for non-potable applications can be a significant saving on mains usage. During heavy storms extra capacity within the harvesting tank acts as a Sustainable Drainage System which can be attenuated and released at a controlled and calculated rate.
A further concept being investigated is ‘Active Attenuation’. Before the prediction of a significant storm event the active pumping of stored water into the drainage system to allow extra capacity at source therefore preventing overwhelming and subsequent local and downstream flooding.
