The British Damage Management Association (BDMA) is the certifying body for damage management professionals, setting standards and providing training and accreditation for practitioners and others involved in the recovery and restoration of damaged properties. When launched in 1999, the BDMA received confirmation of support from Treasury Minister, Melanie Johnson, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) and the Chartered Institute of Loss Adjusters (CILA), for its aim of establishing and promoting industry-wide best practice protocol for the major insurers and loss adjusters.
The BDMA stakeholders range from individual and corporate members, wider industry partners, national and academic bodies and organisations including government departments, to residential and commercial property owners affected by incident damage. It actively promotes the work of members and the industry to raise awareness of the importance of best practice, which makes a significant contribution to reducing environmental damage, unnecessary costs, and the impact on affected businesses and members of the public.
The BDMA delivers technical and corporate training via a range of formats across several related sectors. Indeed, it was the BDMA who initiated and developed the British Standard for Damage Management – BS12999. In furtherance of delivering responsible outcomes, members are required to commit to a code of practice and abide by the BDMA rules.
Socially responsible partnerships and alliances are of great importance to the BDMA, who are supporters of the Business Emergency Resilience Group (BERG), the Building Research Establishment’s Centre4Resilience, and the UK Centre for Moisture in Buildings (UKCMB). Involvement in UKCMB Technical Working Groups contributes to the centre’s research and its objective to substantially improve the way moisture risk is understood and managed.
